Malas, also known as Buddhist prayer beads, are a traditional tool that can be used to keep count while reciting mantras, meditating, performing prostrations, or repeating a Buddha's name. They resemble other prayer beads used in various religions and are often referred to as the "Buddhist rosary."
Interested in using malas for meditation? There are two common methods: -one involves holding the mala between your thumb and third finger, using your middle finger to rotate the beads with each mantra repetition; -the other involves hanging the mala on your middle finger and using your thumb to rotate the beads one by one.
Whichever method you choose, remember to never touch the mala with your index finger.
